I must say that the pyschological aspects of medical procedures and interventions is avoided or ignored by most healthcare physicians (bar a few dedicated specialities like palliative medicine, for example). The focus is on improving quality of life through fixing stuff, and most of us don't stop to think what it might feel like to have a foot long nail knocked into one of our bones should we ever suffer a fracture (or a stent placed into a coronary, or an antifungal given intravenously.. and so on).
